A Prayer of Jabez 5

I remember growing up hearing people talk about prayer and make some of the dumbest statement I’ve ever heard. You know, when I look back on it, they sounded right at the time. I remember hearing somebody say, “You know, there are three levels to Christian maturity in your praying. The first level, the most immature level is when you ask God to bless you. You pray for yourself. That’s immaturity. But the second level, when you grow a little bit in your faith, is you start praying for other people. That’s the second level of maturity. But finally when you are truly spiritual, you don’t pray for yourself, for other people. You pray for the glory of God. The only problem with that is the assumption that praying for ourselves, and praying for God’s glory mutually exclusive. They are not. one of the ways God glorifies his name is by answering our prayers.
Jesus said, “What man is there among you, when his son shall ask him for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he shall ask for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? If then you being evil,
know how to give good gifts to your children how much more shall your father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask him! You see, one way God glorifies himself is by answering our requests.

나는 자라난 기억이 납니다

hearing people talk / about prayer
사람들이 말하는 것을 들으면서 / 기도에 관하여

and make some of the dumbest statements
그리고 가장 어리석은 발언 몇 가지를 말하는 것을

I’ve ever heard.
내가 지금까지 들어본 중

You know, when I look back on it,
내가 그것을 회고해볼 때

they sounded right / at the time.
그 얘기들이 그럴 듯하게 들렸습니다 / 그 당시에는

I remember hearing / somebody say,
나는 들은 기억이 납니다 / 누군가 말하는 것을

“You know, there are three levels
“세 가지의 레벨이 있습니다

to Christian maturity / in your praying.
기독교적 성숙도에는 / 당신이 기도하는데 있어서

The first level, / the most immature level
첫 번째 레벨은 / 가장 미성숙한 수준으로써

is when you ask God / to bless you.
당신이 하나님께 요청할 때 입니다 / 당신을 축복해 달라고

You pray for yourself.
당신은 당신 자신을 위해 기도합니다

That’s immaturity.
그것은 미성숙입니다.

But the second level, / when you grow a little bit / in your faith,
하지만 두 번째 레벨은 / 당신이 조금 더 자라날 때 / 당신의 믿음에 있어서

is you start praying / for other people.
당신은 기도하기 시작합니다 / 다른 사람들을 위해서

That’s the second level of maturity.
그것이 성숙도의 두 번째 레벨입니다.

But finally when you are truly spiritual,
마지막으로 당신이 진실로 영적인 상태가 되었을 때

You don’t pray / for yourself, / for other people.
당신은 기도하지 않습니다 / 당신 자신을 위해서 / 다른 사람들을 위해서

You pray / for the glory of God.
당신은 기도합니다 / 하나님의 영광을 위해

The only problem with that
그 발언에 대한 단 하나의 문제점은

is the assumption / that praying for ourselves, / and praying for God’s glory
가정하는 것입니다 / 우리 자신을 위해 기도하는 것, / 하나님의 영광을 위해 기도하는 것은

mutually exclusive.
서로가 배타적인 것이라고

They are not.
그것들은 그렇지 않습니다.

One of the ways / God glorifies his name
방법들 중 하나는 / 하나님이 자신의 이름을 영광스럽게 하는

is by answering our prayers.
우리들의 기도에 응답함으로써 하시는 것입니다.

Jesus said,
예수님은 말씀 하셨습니다

“What man is there among you,
“어떤 사람이 너희들 가운데 있겠느냐

when his son shall ask him for a loaf,
그의 아들이 그 사람에게 빵 한 덩어리를 요청할 때

will give him a stone?
그 아들에게 돌을 줄?

Or if he shall ask for a fish,
혹은 그의 아들이 생선을 달라고 요청한다면

he will not give him a snake, / will he?
그는 뱀을 주지 않을 것이다, / 그렇지 않겠는가?

If then you being evil,
그렇다면 너희가 악할지라도

know how to give good gifts / to your children
좋은 선물을 줄 줄을 알거든 / 너희의 자녀들에게

how much more / shall your father / who is in heaven
얼마나 더 많이 / 너희의 아버지께서 / 하늘에 계신

give what is good
좋은 것을 주시겠느냐

to those who ask him!
자신에게 요청하는 사람들에게

You see, one way God / glorifies himself
한 가지 방법은 / 하나님께서 자신을 영광스럽게 하시는

is by answering our requests.
우리 자신의 요청에 응답함으로써 하시는 것입니다.
